Decreased cholesterol absorption (50-85%) has been shown in both ileostomy and healthy patients given plants sterols and increased fecal elimination of cholesterol has been observed following consumption of phytosterol esters. Beta-sitosterol is the most commonly found phytosterol in the human diet, accounting for approximately 65% of dietary intake.
