Indole-3-carbinol itself is not active. When indole-3-carbinol comes in contact with stomach acid it is converted to the active metabolites, diindolylmethane and indolylcarbazole. Research into the mode of action of indole-3-carbinol is ongoing. One pathway that has been confirmed is the induction of phase II enzymes in the liver, which seems to have a detoxifying effect by increasing water solubility and increasing excretion of carcinogenic toxins.
